Laura Husar Garcia

"If I were not a woman, I would not have had such intimate access photographing nuns. They gave me a ticket to enter their lives and document everything from death to deep prayer. They were comfortable with me because I am a woman. It was this project that launched my transition from photojournalism to fine art which has been a wonderful adventure where I am able to find my true voice, be appreciated and be heard." - Laura Husar Garcia is a fine art photographer who lives in Chicago.

Susan Mendelson

Sister Mary Ellen Lacy

"I was going to become a doctor and then along the way I decided to become a nurse. It was the best change of path I could have made. As a nurse I was really able to care for my patients and be with my patients in a way that doctors can't. People always remember the nurses that take of them in the hospital because we are the ones by their sides. Later I became a lawyer and then a Nun. Now I work in impoverished communities and I get to encounter God everyday." - Sister Mary Ellen Lacy is a public housing attorney with the Legal Aid Society in East Illinois and part of Nuns on The Bus 2016.

Monica

"When I was 7 and 8 years old and living in the Dominican Republic,  I was sexually and psychologically abused by a family friend.  I didn't tell anyone about it until I was an adult when I confided in a Nun at my church. She helped me and counseled me and eventually I did tell my mother. Now I can talk about the abuse without crying but I still feel an empty space inside of me. I have two children and I am very protective of them, especially my 18 year old daughter." Monica works as a Custodian.

Alice Droogan

"I was in a convent for fourteen years and that is something I couldn't have done if I weren't a woman." I met Alice just as the St. Patrick's Day Parade had ended and she was racing off to catch a train. "It was a great parade. I've been in the parade seven times but this was my first time as an aide to the Grand Marshall."
